✅ Mentor Fire Department Hosts 30th Annual Food Drive to Aid Local Families in Need
City of Mentor
For three decades, the Mentor Fire Department and their families and friends have come together to support the Lake County community through their annual Rescue the Needy Food Drive. This year's drive, scheduled for December 6-7, will be held at the northeast entrance of the Great Lakes Mall near Barnes & Noble, with donations of cash and non-perishable food accepted on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All contributions from the event will benefit the Salvation Army Painesville Corps, a local organization dedicated to assisting those facing economic hardship in Lake County. Through this initiative, donations remain in the community, providing support directly to neighbors in need. Over the past 30 years, the drive has raised more than $175,000 in cash and food, reflecting a significant impact on local hunger relief efforts.
Residents are encouraged to stop by the mall, located at 7850 Mentor Avenue, and contribute what they can to aid the mission of the Salvation Army and ensure families across Lake County have the resources they need this season.
😴 Top 9 Natural Sleep Aids and Tips for a Restful Night
Struggling with sleepless nights? Natural sleep aids may offer relief, from supplements to lifestyle changes, for those experiencing occasional restlessness or long-term insomnia. It's essential to consult a healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement regimen, as these are not FDA-approved and could interact with medications.
9 Natural Sleep Aids
Melatonin: A hormone that regulates sleep cycles, melatonin may benefit those with jet lag, shift work, and insomnia in neurodevelopmental disorders. However, it can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and headaches, particularly if used with certain medications.
Valerian Root: Believed to enhance calm through its effects on GABA levels in the brain, valerian root is taken before bedtime. Though studies are inconclusive, some users report sleep improvements.
Kava: This root is sometimes used for anxiety-induced insomnia, although evidence is sparse. Caution is advised due to potential liver risks with prolonged use.
Chamomile: Often enjoyed as a tea, chamomile may help relaxation but lacks strong evidence for treating insomnia.
Tryptophan: This amino acid is found in foods like turkey and milk and helps the body produce melatonin. It’s generally safer as a dietary component than a supplement, which can cause adverse effects.
Magnesium: A natural sedative, magnesium can promote sleep when taken in moderate amounts. Food sources include nuts, seeds, and leafy greens, though supplements are available.
Passionflower: This herb may improve sleep by calming the brain, though scientific backing is limited. It’s not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.
Cannabidiol (CBD): Derived from hemp, CBD may ease insomnia without the psychoactive effects of cannabis. It has shown mixed results and may interact with other medications.
Glycine: This amino acid, found in meats and seeds, may improve sleep quality when taken before bed, but more research is needed.
Additional Sleep-Boosting Practices
Beyond supplements, several practices support sleep health:
Light Therapy: Exposure to natural light aids in sleep cycle regulation.
Meditation and Yoga: These practices help reduce stress, which may improve sleep quality.
Hypnosis and Acupuncture: While studies are limited, they may assist with relaxation and sleep.
Aromatherapy and Diet: Essential oils and foods rich in magnesium and tryptophan may help.
Music and Exercise: Gentle music and physical activity can improve sleep, though exercise should be done earlier in the day to avoid sleep disruption.
