📰 Ohio’s Drug Crisis Update: Overdose Deaths Fall to Lowest Since 2019

Ohio saw a 9% reduction in overdose deaths in 2023, with fatalities falling 14% since 2021. Opioids, especially fentanyl, still drive most overdose deaths, though fentanyl-related deaths declined by 16%. While heroin overdoses have nearly disappeared, cocaine fatalities have more than tripled since 2014. State health officials credit targeted addiction prevention efforts but emphasize the need for continued focus and use of lifesaving tools like naloxone.

🐶 Step-by-Step Guide to Training Your Puppy for Perfect Leash Walks

How to Train Your Puppy to Walk on a Leash: Essential Tips for Success

Teaching a puppy to walk politely on a leash is a valuable skill that makes daily outings more enjoyable. Despite popular belief, leash walking doesn’t come naturally to most dogs and requires structured training. Here’s a step-by-step guide for introducing your puppy to leash training, ensuring their early walks are smooth and rewarding.

Step 1: Introduce the Collar and Leash

Start by familiarizing your puppy with the collar or harness and leash. Let them wear these for short periods indoors, associating this time with treats and play to create positive associations with leash time.

Step 2: Teach a Cue

Introduce a cue sound, such as a tongue click or specific word, that signals “treat time.” In a quiet area, make the sound, and when your puppy turns toward you, reward them with a treat. This cue helps direct your puppy’s attention to you, setting the foundation for responsive behavior on walks.

Step 3: Practice Coming to You

Encourage your puppy to come toward you while on the leash by backing up a few steps, then rewarding them. Repeat this until they willingly come and walk alongside you when called. Keep training sessions short to prevent overwhelming your puppy.

Step 4: Practice Indoors First

Once your puppy responds well to you indoors, practice leash walking in a quiet room with minimal distractions. This controlled environment helps them get used to the leash without added external stimulation.

Step 5: Take it Outside

When your puppy is comfortable on the leash indoors, start taking short outdoor walks. Stay attentive, as new sights and sounds will be highly intriguing to them. If they get distracted or start to lunge, use your cue sound to regain their attention and reward them for following you.

Common Leash-Training Challenges

  1. Pulling: Stand still if your puppy pulls. Avoid tugging back and let them come to you willingly.

  2. Lunging: Use treats to redirect attention before your puppy lunges at distractions.

  3. Barking: If they bark at other dogs, ensure they have enough exercise and create space to redirect focus with treats.

As your puppy becomes more consistent on the leash, you’ll rely less on treats while maintaining good behavior. If you need additional guidance, the AKC GoodDog! Helpline offers professional support, helping owners with customized training advice on leash walking and other behaviors.
