💥 Overturned Vehicle Causes Traffic Delays on I-90 Eastbound
A male driver was hospitalized following a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 eastbound in Mentor. Mentor Police and Fire were alerted to the incident on October 24 near state Route 615, where a car had overturned off the south side of the road.
The driver reportedly reached down to pick up an item, leading his vehicle to veer off the road and strike a guardrail, causing it to flip. Despite the impact, he managed to exit the vehicle on his own and was later transported by Mentor Fire to UH Lake West Medical Center for further evaluation.
The crash resulted in lane closures, with I-90 reduced to one lane for over two hours as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) worked to repair the damaged guardrail.
📰 Chemical Technician Training Program Expands Across U.S. Community Colleges
Four New Jersey community college students spent the summer gaining hands-on experience at Rowan University through internships aimed at preparing them for careers as chemical technicians. Over 10 weeks, they learned to operate advanced laboratory equipment, building both technical and soft skills to increase their job marketability, according to Rowan College of South Jersey professor Christina Nase.
These internships were funded by an American Chemical Society (ACS) PrepareCTP Seed Grant, part of a broader ACS initiative to address the chemical industry's technician shortage, largely due to retirements and a decline in interest in technician roles. The grant program upskills students in two-year programs and promotes technical career paths that don’t require four-year degrees. John-David R. Rocha, program manager in the ACS Education Division, highlights that community colleges play a critical role in linking students to future employment in the chemical industry.
Lakeland Community College in Ohio, also an ACS grant recipient, is focusing its funding on expanding internships and scholarships, specifically to encourage students to remain in the chemistry field and complete chemical technician certificates. Chemistry professor Sarah Preston shared that the college will launch a one-credit summer course in 2025 for second-year students, featuring resume-building, interview preparation, and workplace readiness training. This course will conclude with internships at companies like Lubrizol and Sherwin-Williams. Additionally, Lakeland will offer scholarships to cover second-year chemistry classes, hoping to retain more students in the program.

🏘️ Carpet vs. Hardwood: Choosing the Right Flooring for Every Room

When choosing between carpet and hardwood flooring, homeowners are often considering comfort, aesthetics, longevity, and budget. These two popular flooring materials offer different experiences and benefits, making them suited to distinct spaces within a home.
Carpet, crafted primarily from synthetic fibers like nylon or polyester, offers a soft, warm, and cushioned feel underfoot, dampens noise, and is relatively affordable. Its comfort makes it ideal for bedrooms, playrooms, and spaces focused on relaxation. However, carpeting has a shorter lifespan—around 10 years—and lacks real estate value, as it’s generally seen as a less durable option. Maintenance involves regular vacuuming and occasional deep cleaning to manage dust and stains, and for allergy sufferers, it can trap allergens like dust and pollen.
In contrast, hardwood flooring, whether solid or engineered, is a natural material known for durability and style. While solid hardwood can last for generations, engineered hardwood offers stability against moisture changes and is often more affordable. Hardwood brings a refined, natural look to any space, and unlike carpet, adds to the real estate value. Cleaning is straightforward, usually needing just sweeping or damp-mopping, and it doesn’t trap allergens, which appeals to those with allergies. However, hardwood can feel cold, and it lacks sound insulation. Hardwood is also best reserved for dry, non-basement areas.
Both materials require professional installation for the best results, though hardwood generally incurs higher installation costs. Over time, hardwood proves to be the more resilient investment, despite its upfront expense. Homeowners may prefer carpet for comfort or budget-friendly considerations, while hardwood suits those focused on durability, aesthetics, and long-term value.
