šŸ“° Mentor Increases Yard Waste Collection Limits for Fall 2024

City of Mentor

The City of Mentorā€™s Yard Waste Program runs from early April through mid-December each year, with expanded services during the fall. From October 21 to December 14, 2024, homeowners can increase their yard waste disposal from 12 units to 25 units per week. A unit is defined as a single bag, bundle, or container.

Key guidelines for disposal include:

  • Each unit must weigh under 35 pounds.

  • Branches should be no more than 3 inches in diameter and cut into 4-foot bundles.

  • Only biodegradable paper bags are accepted for waste, while plastic bags are not. Reusable containers with a 32-gallon capacity can also be used, as long as they are marked ā€œYWā€ and have drainage holes near the bottom.

During the fall season, the city anticipates higher yard waste volumes and will deploy additional trucks and staff, potentially affecting collection times. Homeowners are encouraged to set out waste the night before their scheduled collection day to avoid missed pickups.

For more details, visit the Waste Removal and Recycling page or contact the Public Works Department at 440-974-5781. Note that the start date of the fall collection was incorrectly listed as October 1 in the city newsletter.

āš¾ Guardians Face Elimination After Yankees Secure Game 4 Win, 8-6

In a dramatic Game 4 of the American League Championship Series, the New York Yankees edged closer to another World Series appearance by defeating the Cleveland Guardians 8-6. Clevelandā€™s All-Star closer, Emmanuel Clase, faltered in the ninth inning for the second consecutive night, surrendering two runs. Despite a spirited late-game rally by the Guardians, the Yankees held on to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Giancarlo Stanton powered the Yankeesā€™ offense with a three-run homer, his 15th career postseason blast, while Juan Soto also contributed with a two-run shot. The Guardians, facing elimination, fought back in the seventh and eighth innings, capitalizing on New York's fielding errors and closing the gap to tie the game. Josh Naylor's RBI double in the seventh and a key error by Yankeesā€™ first baseman Anthony Rizzo helped Cleveland keep the game competitive.

However, the Yankees' bullpen, led by Tommy Kahnle, managed to seal the win in the ninth, stopping Cleveland's final scoring threat. Cleveland now faces a daunting challenge, needing to win three consecutive games, including two at Yankee Stadium, to avoid extending their 76-year World Series drought.

šŸˆ Mentor Secures GCC Championship with 44-17 Win Over Strongsville

Mentor High School's football team secured a dominant 44-17 victory over Strongsville on October 18, clinching at least a share of the Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) championship for the first time since 2020. As the scoreboard at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium declared them champions, the Cardinals celebrated their undefeated season so far, improving to 9-0 (5-0 GCC). A win against Euclid on October 25 will give Mentor the title outright.

West Virginia-bound quarterback Scotty Fox led the offense with 279 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and one rushing score. Junior running back Jackson Farley contributed 184 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and 38 receiving yards, helping Mentor score on its first seven possessions. Strongsville, bolstered by a strong ground game, kept the match competitive in the first half, with running back Kendrick Boddie scoring twice. However, Mentor's defense tightened in the second half, recovering a fumble and forcing three fourth-down stops.

The Cardinals amassed 551 yards of total offense while holding Strongsville to a single field goal after halftime. This victory sets the stage for Mentor's bid for a perfect regular season, with hopes of continuing their playoff run deep into December.

šŸˆ Lake Catholic Stays Undefeated with 31-12 Win Over Central Catholic

Mentor Lake Catholic's football team continued their dominant season with a 31-12 victory over Central Catholic on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024. With this win, the Cougars remain undefeated at 9-0 and hold the top spot in the Associated Press Division IV state poll. Although Central Catholic, now 4-5, fought hard, they couldn't match the offensive firepower of Lake Catholic, led by quarterback Frankie Trinetti. Despite a spirited effort, including a 67-yard trick play that set up a touchdown for Central Catholic, the Crusaders couldnā€™t close the gap.

Lake Catholicā€™s DJ Sears contributed a key touchdown, while Trinetti and his deep roster of talented players, including defensive stars Cross Nimmo and Jayson Cummings, kept the Cougars firmly in control. Head coach Marty Gibbons praised his teamā€™s consistency but remains focused on their long-term goal of a state championship. Central Catholic head coach Jeff Lindesmith acknowledged the strength of Lake Catholic, praising his teamā€™s effort despite missed opportunities that could have changed the gameā€™s momentum.

Central Catholicā€™s playoff hopes hinge on their regular-season finale, where a win against St. Thomas Aquinas could secure them a spot in Division V postseason action.
