📰 Mentor Family Battles HOA Over Swim Spa for Disabled Daughter’s Therapy

Courtesy: Ray Christner

An 8-year-old girl’s backyard swim spa, essential for her physical therapy, has become the focal point of a homeowners association (HOA) dispute in Mentor. Harper Christner, who suffers from McCune-Albright syndrome, a rare bone disorder that weakens her joints, was gifted the swim spa by the Special Wish Foundation and Northeast Factory Direct in 2022 to help with her doctor-recommended aqua therapy. The spa offers Harper temporary relief from her wheelchair and a way to manage her condition.

However, the Christner family, living in the Newell Creek subdivision, has faced ongoing complaints from their HOA about the swim spa’s size and use. Initially approved by the association's management company, the swim spa was later deemed larger than what was originally submitted for approval. Continental Management, which oversees the HOA, raised concerns that the spa was being used for purposes beyond Harper’s medical needs, citing noise complaints and misuse during gatherings. The HOA allowed the spa under specific conditions that restricted its use to Harper, her family, and one friend or her physical therapist. It also stated that if the family moves, the spa cannot be sold with the property.

Despite receiving permission for the installation, the Christners were shocked when they were told the spa violated HOA rules and could face fines or be removed. The family expressed frustration, feeling that the HOA was failing to acknowledge the medical importance of the spa to Harper’s well-being. The dispute has escalated, with the HOA standing firm on its position, while the Christners continue to advocate for their daughter’s needs, saying the swim spa is more than a therapeutic tool—it offers Harper a chance to feel like a normal child, even if just for a few hours.

📰 Ohio Troopers Warn: Hands-Free Law Enforced as Distracted Driving Decreases

The video above is from News5Cleveland and was aired yesterday, on 10/16/2024.

A year after Ohio’s hands-free law took effect, state officials report a decrease in distracted driving accidents. Troopers continue to enforce the law, reminding drivers that holding a phone while driving can lead to fines and license points. Distracted driving accounts for about a quarter of accidents in Ohio.

📰 Lake County Traffic Stop Uncovers 325 Suspected Fentanyl Pills

In Lake County, Ohio, a routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a driver after deputies discovered a plastic bag containing hundreds of pills. The traffic stop occurred on State Route 2 near State Route 44 in Painesville Township, where officers found 325 blue pills marked with 'M' and '30.'

The driver was charged with possessing a bulk quantity of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence. In addition to these charges, the individual was cited for driving under suspension and lacking a valid operator’s license.

According to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, opioids remain one of the most abused and trafficked drugs in the area. They noted that while many pills on the street appear to be prescription drugs, the vast majority, around 99%, are made up of fentanyl and other dangerous fillers. According to the release, the 325 pills were made to look like Oxycodone or OxyContin

🐕 How to Stop Excessive Barking with Consistent Training

Barking is a natural behavior for dogs, but excessive barking can become a nuisance if not addressed correctly. Many pet owners attempt to stop their dogs from barking through methods that don’t work in the long term, such as yelling or inconsistent discipline. To effectively manage this behavior, it’s essential to identify the cause, whether it’s boredom, anxiety, or something else.

One of the key solutions is exercise. Ensuring that dogs get enough physical and mental activity can reduce barking, as a tired dog is more likely to rest when left alone. Socialization is also important. Dogs that have had positive experiences with a variety of people and situations are less likely to bark out of fear or unfamiliarity. Introducing interactive toys and puzzles can also help keep dogs occupied, while managing their surroundings, such as by leaving the TV on or closing blinds, may reduce triggers.

Training dogs to respond to the “quiet” command is another effective method, using positive reinforcement to encourage calm behavior. Ignoring barking that seeks attention and rewarding calm behavior helps reshape expectations. For those looking to go the extra mile, enrolling a dog in the Canine Good Citizen program provides foundational training that promotes good behavior.

Ultimately, while barking is unavoidable, addressing the root cause with patience and consistency is key to managing it effectively.
