With stores filling up with Halloween candy and fall decorations, it's clear that trick-or-treat season is just around the corner! To help families plan their candy-filled adventures, we’ve compiled a list of Northeast Ohio communities hosting trick-or-treat events.

While many communities hold their trick-or-treat on Thursday, October 31, some opt for weekend events. Be sure to check your local schedule to ensure you don’t miss out. In Mentor, for example, trick-or-treating will take place on October 31 from 6-8 p.m.

🚨 Statewide Crackdown on Human Trafficking Results in 132 Arrests

A statewide human trafficking operation conducted by more than 100 law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrest of 132 individuals attempting to buy sex, including some involving minors, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced. The operation, named Operation END-OHHT, ran from Oct. 6-12 across 19 Ohio counties, targeting those fueling human trafficking.

The effort, led by the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission (OOCIC), involved eight human trafficking task forces and 12 other local law enforcement agencies. Among those arrested were 110 “johns” charged with prostitution or solicitation, and 22 individuals facing felony charges for seeking sex with minors or drug offenses. Those arrested ranged in age from 21 to 71, coming from varied backgrounds, including laborers, business owners, and government employees.

Authorities also identified 74 human trafficking survivors, connecting them with healthcare and social services. Task forces raided nine locations, including massage parlors and a motel linked to human trafficking, seizing over $20,000 in cash and other evidence.

Key highlights included the arrest of multiple individuals on charges of sexual exploitation of minors and trafficking. Arrests occurred throughout Ohio, with long-term investigations furthered by the raids. The operation’s goal is that of reducing the demand for human trafficking.

📰 Lithium-Ion Battery Fires on the Rise: Safety Tips from Mentor Fire Department

As rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power more everyday devices like electric cars, bikes, and tools, the risk of fires from these batteries has grown. Lithium-ion battery fires are particularly dangerous as they burn hotter, don’t need oxygen, and can explode without warning. Most are caused by "thermal runaway," where a battery overheats and ignites.

The Mentor Fire Department has handled several battery fire incidents recently. To stay safe, follow these tips:

• Heed Warning Signs: If a battery overheats, swells, or emits strange smells or sounds, unplug it and move it outside to cool before disposing of it.

• Keep It Cool: Let batteries cool before charging to avoid overheating and extend their lifespan.

• Monitor Charging: Don’t charge devices overnight. Use well-ventilated areas, away from flammable materials.

• Charge Safely: Charge large battery packs, like those in bikes or scooters, outside. Keep them away from exits and store them in a garage or shed.

• Clear Exits: Keep entryways clear and ensure smoke alarms work for safe evacuation in case of fire.

🚨 Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Painesville Claims Life of Local Resident

The Painesville Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred over the weekend. Officers responded to the scene on Roosevelt Drive at 10:46 p.m. on Saturday, where they found 31-year-old Frank Ladany of Painesville Township, who died from his injuries after crashing his 1999 Harley Davidson.

In a press release issued Monday, the Painesville Police extended condolences to Ladany’s family and friends. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Painesville Police Department at 440-392-5840.

⚾ Yankees Take Early Lead in ALCS with 5-2 Victory Over Guardians

The New York Yankees took the first step toward the World Series on Monday night, defeating the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) at Yankee Stadium. This victory gives the Yankees a 1-0 series lead, bringing them within three wins of their first World Series appearance since 2009.

The Yankees' momentum surged in the third inning when Juan Soto opened the scoring with a solo home run to center field, marking his first of the postseason. Cleveland pitcher Joey Cantillo, who came in for starter Alex Cobb, struggled to find control, allowing two additional Yankees runs on wild pitches. Giancarlo Stanton managed to sneak home on one of those pitches, pushing the score to 3-0.

New York extended their lead in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from Aaron Judge, which brought in Gleyber Torres to make it 4-0. The Guardians fought back, scoring on a solo home run from Brayan Rocchio in the sixth and an RBI single from Steven Kwan in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough. Stanton responded with a solo shot in the seventh, securing the final score at 5-2.

Yankees' starter Carlos Rodón was dominant, recording nine strikeouts while allowing just three hits over six innings. Luke Weaver secured the win with a five-out save, striking out Austin Hedges to end the game. Weaver's performance marked his third postseason save of more than three outs, a feat last accomplished in 2017.

The series will continue tonight, on Tuesday, before shifting to Cleveland for Game 3, with the Guardians looking to bounce back after a tough start.
