🏈 Cardinals Keep Rolling: Mentor Defeats Brunswick 45-14 in Conference Play

Mentor secured a decisive 45-14 road victory over Brunswick on Friday night in a Greater Cleveland Conference matchup. The Cardinals, now 8-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play, showcased a balanced offensive attack, amassing 262 passing yards and 190 rushing yards.

Mentor’s offense wasted no time, with running back Jackson Farley leading the way early. The junior rushed for 89 yards in the first quarter alone. Farley’s first score came on an 11-yard run, and he followed it up with a seven-yard touchdown late in the quarter, giving Mentor a 14-7 lead. His two touchdowns sandwiched a 26-yard scoring pass from Brunswick’s Sean Barnett to Hayden Swarm, which briefly tied the game at 7-7. Farley finished the night with 104 yards on 18 carries.

As the game progressed, Mentor’s passing game came alive behind senior quarterback Scotty Fox. The West Virginia commit completed 6 of 7 passes in the second quarter, including a 46-yard touchdown pass to Austin Van Huss just before halftime, giving the Cardinals a 21-7 lead. Fox continued to excel in the second half, throwing three more touchdown passes, two of them to Van Huss and one to Marcus Sierputowski. Fox ended the night with 262 passing yards, completing 20 of 26 passes with four touchdowns.

Van Huss was Fox’s top target, catching eight passes for 108 yards and two scores, while Sierputowski added five catches for 53 yards and a touchdown. Mentor’s balanced offensive attack kept Brunswick’s defense on its heels throughout the game.

Brunswick briefly cut the lead to 24-14 in the third quarter with a rushing touchdown from Barnett, who also led the team in passing with 153 yards. However, Mentor quickly responded with Fox’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Van Huss, followed by a 13-yard strike to Sierputowski early in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach.

Dominic Burns sealed the victory for the Cardinals with a 46-yard touchdown run late in the game, triggering a running clock. Mentor’s defense also stepped up, holding Brunswick’s offense in check after each of their scores.

Mentor returns home next week for a conference game against Strongsville, while Brunswick, now 2-5, will host Walsh Jesuit.

The Lake Catholic Cougars continued their dominance with a commanding 49-6 victory over the Elyria Catholic Panthers on Friday night. Lake Catholic, now 8-0, showcased its well-balanced offense from the outset, scoring on its first drive and maintaining control throughout the game.

The Cougars began with a 12-play, six-minute drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Frankie Trinetti to Ace Peterlin. Although Elyria Catholic responded quickly with a 79-yard touchdown run by Connor Petrus, it was their only score of the night as Lake Catholic’s defense clamped down, preventing the Panthers from crossing the 50-yard line until the fourth quarter.

Lake Catholic's offense fired on all cylinders, with Trinetti leading the charge. He threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns, completing 17 of 20 passes, including a perfect 12 consecutive completions in the first half. Cross Nimmo was a key target, catching six passes for 149 yards, including a spectacular 50-yard reception that set up a 1-yard score.

In addition to the air attack, the Cougars’ ground game was just as effective. Jimmy Gibbons ran for 70 yards and a touchdown, while George Csepegi contributed two rushing touchdowns, including a 33-yard run where he skillfully stayed inbounds along the sideline.

Lake Catholic’s defense also made its presence felt, with an interception by Peterlin early in the second half that led to another score. The Cougars wrapped up the win with a balanced offense that produced three touchdowns on the ground and three through the air.

With two games left in the regular season, Lake Catholic remains unbeaten, while Elyria Catholic falls to 1-7. Lake Catholic will face Canton Central Catholic on the road next, while Elyria Catholic heads to Holy Name.
