🍩 End of an Era: Spudnuts in Mentor Bids Farewell After Four Decades

Spudnuts in Mentor

After more than 40 years of serving the Mentor community, Spudnuts will be closing its doors on Friday, October 11. This beloved local institution has been a staple in the area for decades, known for its unique potato-based donuts and warm, welcoming atmosphere. With its rich history and strong local ties, the news of the closure has come as a disappointment to many in the community.

As Spudnuts prepares for its final day, residents are encouraged to come out and show their support, helping the shop go out on a high note. Whether it's grabbing one last box of their famous donuts or simply stopping by to share memories, it's a chance for the community to give Spudnuts the sendoff it deserves. Although it's sad to see this longtime local favorite close its doors, the impact it has made on Mentor won't be forgotten.

📰 Job Fair at Lakeland College: Laketran Looks to Fill Multiple Roles

Laketran is looking to fill several positions and will host an in-person hiring event on Tuesday October 15 at Lakeland Community College. The transit agency is aiming to hire up to 16 part-time bus drivers for its Dial-a-Ride service, which serves seniors and people with disabilities across Lake County. These part-time roles may lead to full-time positions.

The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. inside the H-Building at Lakeland Community College, located at 7700 Clocktower Drive. Suggested Parking: H-Building Central lot – P8 on Campus Map. Candidates are encouraged to apply online beforehand and must bring a valid driver’s license for interviews. A six-week training class, starting on November 12, is required for new hires. While a commercial driver's license is not necessary, applicants will undergo a background check, drug test, and ODOT physical.

Laketran is also seeking full-time mechanics, offering a $2,000 signing bonus. They are additionally recruiting vehicle servers, with all employees benefiting from competitive salaries, paid leave, and retirement plans. Laketran covers the cost of training for part-time drivers promoted to full-time positions.

📰 Mentor Nature Preserve: A Premier Birdwatching Destination in Northeast Ohio

Mentor's 230-acre nature preserve, a prime birding location in Northeast Ohio, offers 1.5 miles of scenic shoreline featuring rare dune plants, a riverine marsh, and a mature oak bluff. Situated on the western edge of the 800-acre Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve, this area is recognized as one of the best birding sites in Ohio. The marsh boasts diverse wetland habitats, serving as crucial breeding and nursery grounds for fish and waterfowl. It is also a vital stopover for migratory neo-tropical birds and butterflies, traveling thousands of miles in the spring and fall.

With over 260 bird species recorded within or around the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Mentor Marsh, the site attracts birdwatchers year-round. Recent efforts led by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to remove invasive phragmites have made the area even more appealing to rare marsh birds. The possibility of spotting rare bird species continues to rise, and the marsh now hosts protected species like the once-endangered Bald Eagle. Due to these factors, the area has been designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) within the Grand River-Lower Watershed.

Birdwatchers can enjoy several vantage points along the east and south sides of the preserve. These areas offer views of the marsh and mudflats, excellent for spotting shorebirds and waterfowl during migration. The Overlook Trail winds through deciduous forests teeming with warblers, vireos, and flycatchers in warmer months, and is home to a variety of species throughout the year. It leads to the bluffs, a prime spot for observing wintering species like mergansers, gulls, and scoters on Lake Erie.

The City of Mentor's Natural Resources Division continues to monitor the diversity and health of species within the Mentor Lagoons and Marsh, utilizing data from local birders and eBird to create seasonal abundance ratings for various species. Birding enthusiasts can visit the eBird website or download the app to record their observations, and access the Merlin Bird ID app for help identifying species. Additional resources for regional birding information are available through the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Blackbrook Audubon Society.

⚾ Undefeated Mentor Cardinals Gear Up for Road Test at Brunswick

Mentor v. Brunswick

The Mentor Cardinals are set to face the Brunswick Blue Devils this Friday at 7:00 p.m., aiming to extend their dominance in the series after winning nine of the last ten matchups. The Cardinals, undefeated so far this season, come into the game after a commanding 45-6 road win against Shaker Heights last week. Running back Jackson Farley and quarterback Scotty Fox played crucial roles, with Farley rushing for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and Fox passing for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Farley’s impressive streak now stands at seven consecutive games with over 100 rushing yards.

Brunswick, meanwhile, heads into the game with some newfound momentum. The Blue Devils snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a convincing 35-3 win over Shaker Heights last Friday, marking their second victory of the season and their highest point total so far. This performance offers a boost of confidence, but they face a significant challenge in Mentor, who blanked them 41-0 in their last meeting in October 2023.

Mentor, sitting at 7-0, will look to continue their perfect season, while Brunswick, now 2-4, hopes to disrupt their rival’s dominance. With the game being held at Brunswick's home field, the Blue Devils will look to make this rematch a much tougher contest for the Cardinals.

🏈 Lake Catholic’s Unbeaten Streak on the Line Against Elyria Catholic

Lake Catholic (7-0) hosts Elyria Catholic (1-6) at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium tonight starting at 7pm in a non-conference showdown. Though both teams will compete in the North Coast Conference next year, no conference title is on the line this season due to an incomplete schedule among its members.

Lake Catholic enters the game with a dominant offense and a stout defense. Quarterback Frankie Trinetti has amassed 1,504 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, while top receiver Ace Peterlin has 41 catches for 640 yards. Jimmy Gibbons has been effective on the ground with 553 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. The Cougars’ defense, equally impressive, has recorded 16 sacks—five by Jayson Cummings—and 10 interceptions, with Peterlin and Patrick Radigan snagging three each. Special teams also shine, as kicker Harley Forkins is among the top in the area.

Elyria Catholic, struggling this season, was recently defeated by Benedictine 42-9, while Lake Catholic cruised past Padua 46-17. The Cougars look to continue their undefeated run tonight at home.

⚾ David Fry’s Heroics Push Guardians Past Tigers to Force Game 5

In a thrilling game, pinch-hitter David Fry played a pivotal role in the Cleveland Guardians’ 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers, forcing a decisive Game 5 in their AL Division Series. Fry’s two-run homer in the seventh inning put Cleveland ahead, and his ninth-inning bunt added a crucial insurance run. The Guardians, snapping a streak of 11 consecutive postseason elimination losses, will now host Game 5 on Saturday.

The Tigers had rallied from a 2-1 deficit earlier in the game, with Zach McKinstry's home run and Wenceel Pérez’s RBI single giving them the lead in the fifth and sixth innings. However, Fry's heroics in the seventh, which marked Cleveland’s second pinch-hit home run in postseason history, silenced a record-setting crowd at Comerica Park. Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase secured the win despite a late Tigers surge in the ninth.

Game 5 is set for Saturday in Cleveland, where the Guardians will start Matthew Boyd against the Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal. The winner will advance to the AL Championship Series to face either the New York Yankees or Kansas City Royals.
