📰 Painesville to Retire Coal Plant with $129M EPA Grant, Embrace Solar Power

The City of Painesville is set to retire its long-standing coal plant with the help of a $129 million federal grant. The grant will fund the construction of new solar facilities, battery storage, natural habitat restoration, increased tree coverage on a brownfield near Lake Erie, and the creation of pollinator habitats at solar sites.

Having operated since the early 1900s, the Painesville Municipal Plant is one of the last three municipal coal plants in Ohio. This closure marks the 385th plant retirement under the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign, which began in 2010.

Ericka Copeland, Chapter Director of Sierra Club Ohio, celebrated the retirement as a significant win for Painesville and surrounding areas, emphasizing the critical nature of such projects. Neil Waggoner, Midwest Campaign Manager for the Beyond Coal Campaign, highlighted Ohio’s progress in coal plant retirements, praising Painesville's transition to solar energy and battery storage as a model for other communities.

Antha Williams from Bloomberg Philanthropies expressed pride in supporting the Beyond Coal campaign and underscored the importance of federal investments in helping communities transition from coal to renewable energy.

The EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program has chosen 25 projects, including Painesville’s, aiming to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The City of Painesville expects to retire the coal plant and bring the new solar power online by 2027.

📰 High-Tech Drones Aid Ohio State Troopers in Arresting Suspected Killer

State troopers arrested a suspected murderer hiding in a vacant house on Cleveland’s east side, thanks to the advanced technology of drones and robots. The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has been utilizing these high-tech tools to combat crime more effectively.

On Tuesday, the OSHP employed a helicopter to track a suspect wanted for murder. The man was found hiding inside a vacant house, located with the help of a drone that searched the building room-by-room, sending real-time video to troopers outside.

Sgt. John Beeler of the Ohio State Highway Patrol emphasized the life-saving potential of drones, stating, "It's life-saving when you think about having to risk sending one of our officers in there." The OSHP demonstrated how these drones can navigate through houses, fly under tables, and provide critical intelligence without putting officers in harm's way.

In addition to drones, the OSHP showcased a robot equipped with multiple cameras and a claw. Trooper Colin Acciavatti explained, "The claw is probably the number one feature of this entire robot. It allows us to open doors or drag items or people from an incident." The robot also facilitates communication, enabling troopers to speak to suspects or gather intelligence from a safe distance.

Despite many police agencies adopting drone technology, Cleveland police have faced delays in implementing such systems due to bureaucratic hurdles. Meanwhile, the OSHP continues to advance its capabilities, utilizing drones and robots to enhance public safety and law enforcement efficiency.

Sgt. Beeler noted, "Technology behind the drones and the robots is ever changing, but we try to stay on top of it as much as we can." The use of these advanced tools demonstrates their potential in handling dangerous situations and capturing criminals, significantly impacting how law enforcement operates.

🫐Summer Pet Care: Healthy and Hydrating Foods for Your Furry Friends

Summer is a season of sunshine and outdoor fun, but it also brings higher temperatures that can affect our pets. Keeping pets cool and hydrated is essential, and incorporating seasonal foods and treats into their diet can help. Here are some summer-specific pet care tips focusing on foods and treats that will keep your furry friends happy and healthy.

Hydration is Key

The most crucial aspect of summer pet care is ensuring your pets stay hydrated. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water. You can also keep your pets hydrated with water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon. These can be cut into small, manageable pieces and given as refreshing treats.

Frozen Delights

Frozen treats are perfect for cooling down pets on hot days. You can make simple and healthy frozen snacks by blending pet-safe fruits with plain yogurt and freezing the mixture in ice cube trays. Popular fruits for these treats include blueberries, strawberries, and watermelon. Avoid using artificial sweeteners, especially xylitol, which is toxic to pets.

Summer Vegetables

Summer brings an abundance of vegetables that can be great for pets. Carrots, green beans, and zucchini are all excellent choices. These vegetables can be served raw or lightly steamed to retain their nutrients. They provide a crunchy texture that many pets enjoy and are packed with vitamins and minerals.

Herbal Additions

Certain herbs can be beneficial for pets during the summer. Fresh mint can help freshen breath, and parsley is good for digestion. These herbs can be chopped finely and sprinkled over your pet’s food or mixed into homemade treats.

Cooling Proteins

Incorporating lean proteins like chicken or turkey into your pet's summer diet can help maintain their energy levels without adding unnecessary fat. These proteins can be boiled and shredded into small pieces. Be sure to avoid seasonings and bones, which can be harmful.

Avoid Harmful Foods

Summer often means barbecues and outdoor meals, but be cautious about sharing human foods with pets. Avoid giving pets foods that are too fatty, salty, or spicy. Common barbecue foods like onions, garlic, and certain spices can be toxic to pets.

Monitor for Allergies

Introduce new foods gradually and monitor your pet for any signs of allergies or digestive issues. If your pet shows signs of discomfort, discontinue the new food and consult your veterinarian.

By focusing on hydration and providing seasonal, pet-safe foods and treats, you can help your pets stay cool and enjoy the summer months. With these tips, your furry friends can have a fun, healthy, and refreshing summer.

🐶 High Capacity Prompts Cuyahoga Shelter to Slash Adoption Fees

The Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter is significantly reducing its adoption fees for all dogs this week in response to the shelter's high capacity. The standard adoption fee of $95 has been decreased to $30, effective until Wednesday, July 31. This initiative is part of a collaboration with the Bissell Pet Foundation’s nationwide Empty the Shelters campaign.

The reduced adoption fee of $30 encompasses a comprehensive range of services, including spaying or neutering, vaccinations, a 2024 dog license, microchipping, and a current rabies tag. This offer aims to mitigate the strain caused by the high intake levels currently experienced by the shelter.

“Shelters are continuing to experience high intake levels, causing a significant strain on the animals,” stated CCAS Administrator Mindy Naticchioni. “We are currently out of kennels for new strays. If you’ve been considering bringing a fur baby into your home, the Empty the Shelters event provides a great opportunity to do so at a reduced cost.”

In addition to promoting adoptions, the shelter is urgently seeking temporary foster homes for incoming animals to alleviate the current overcrowding. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the shelter via email at [email protected] or visit in person.

The Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter operates from Tuesday through Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

At the Lake County Shelter, they hold stray dogs for four business days to allow owners to reclaim them. Prospective adopters are encouraged to research breed traits, bring their families for meet-and-greet sessions, and call ahead to check a dog’s availability. The adoption fee is $80 plus a $20 registration fee, covering vaccinations, a license, and microchip.

Josh Naylor's Clutch Hit Lifts Guardians Over Tigers in 2-1 Win

Josh Naylor delivered a crucial two-out, tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning, propelling the Cleveland Guardians to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. The game saw the departure of Cleveland’s ace, Tanner Bibee, due to cramping after the fifth inning. Bibee, who had allowed only a first-inning home run to Matt Vierling and one other hit, was locked in a tight duel with Detroit's Jack Flaherty. Bibee’s exit saw the Guardians' bullpen step up impressively, with Scott Barlow, Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis (4-2), and Emmanuel Clase (31st save) combining to hold Detroit hitless and permitting just one baserunner in the final four innings.

In the pivotal eighth inning, Bo Naylor started with a leadoff walk from Beau Brieske (1-1), stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout. Following an intentional walk to Jose Ramirez, Josh Naylor’s single narrowly eluded second baseman Colt Keith, securing the win for the AL Central-leading Guardians. This victory marked Cleveland’s second straight after losing seven of their previous nine games.

Jack Flaherty, for the sixth time in his last eight starts, allowed one or no runs, with his lone tally this game being unearned. Flaherty pitched six innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out six, lowering his ERA to 2.95 and intensifying trade rumors ahead of the deadline. The Tigers' early lead came from Vierling’s opposite-field home run in the first inning. Bo Naylor tied the game for Cleveland in the fifth inning, scoring on Steven Kwan’s single after advancing on a passed ball. The Tigers have now dropped three of their last four games following a 10-2 stretch.
