šŸ“° Meet Hurri'Kane': Mentor's Own Mullet Champ Contender

Kane Zorichak - Hurriā€Kaneā€

A local resident is seeking to make some waves in the USA Mullet Championship competition in the 5-7 year-old category! The votes are in for round 1, but the winners moving on to round two will be announced on Monday, July 22. Stay tuned for updates. Fingers crossed! šŸ¤ž

Kane is no stranger to the mullet competition, having participated for two years. His mullet, which he has been growing for three years, frequently garners compliments for its long, natural, curly locks.

When he's not busy with school, Kane enjoys playing baseball, football, wrestling, and hanging out with friends. He's thrilled to represent mullet nation once again and is ready to shake his mullet with pride. Best of luck, Hurri"Kane"!

In 2023, The Mullet Nation successfully raised over $220,000 for the Jared Allen Homes for Wounded Warriors (JAH4WW) foundation. This impressive fundraising effort will go entirely towards the construction of homes for critically injured veterans. šŸ“° Ohio Lake Erie Commission Awards $150,000 in Protection Grants

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission recently announced nearly $150,000 in grants from the Lake Erie Protection Fund to support three new projects. These grants aim to protect, preserve, and restore Lake Erie and its watershed.

Funded by proceeds from Lake Erie License Plate sales and tax-deductible donations, the Lake Erie Protection Fund has been instrumental in financing environmental efforts since its establishment in 1993. To date, it has received $13 million in donations and awarded over 600 grants.

The 2024 Lake Erie Protection Fund grants were awarded to the following projects:

  • West Creek Conservancy: Received $50,000 for the Grand River Casement Floodplain Restoration Project in Painesville, Ohio. This grant will support site assessments and the development of concept plans to restore floodplain functionality at a former golf course, reduce high-flow velocity, and increase sediment capture.

  • City of Bay Village: Awarded $50,000 for the Cahoon Park Lakefront Bay Point Final Engineering & Design. This funding will go towards developing engineering and design plans for nature-based solutions to address shoreline erosion, as part of a larger project at Cahoon Park.

  • Ohio Sea Grant: Granted $49,998 for Assessing Marine Debris Prevention & Removal Technologies at marinas. This project will include three case studies, a marine debris workshop, five presentations and/or displays, and the addition of marine debris prevention measures to the Ideal Clean Marine toolkit.

These grant applications were evaluated by technical experts from six state agencies involved in the Ohio Lake Erie Commission. Approved projects must assist with the implementation of the Lake Erie Protection & Restoration Plan 2023.

Support for the Lake Erie Protection Fund comes from donations and the sale of Lake Erie license plates. To contribute, visit Lake Erie Protection Fund.

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission was created to safeguard Lake Erieā€™s natural resources, improve water quality, and promote regional economic development. The Commission is chaired by the director of the Ohio EPA and includes directors from the state departments of Transportation, Health, Development, Agriculture, Natural Resources, and seven members appointed by the Governor.

āš¾ JosĆ© RamĆrez Leads Guardians to 7-0 Victory Over Padres

JosĆ© RamĆrezā€™s two-run single capped a six-run eighth inning as the Cleveland Guardians shut out the San Diego Padres 7-0 on Friday night. Tanner Bibee, along with three relievers, combined for a four-hitter, demonstrating the team's strong pitching.

In the eighth inning, Cleveland recorded five hits and a bases-loaded walk by David Fry. RamĆrezā€™s single up the middle brought his RBI total to 79, second only to the Yankees' Aaron Judge. Brayan Rocchio contributed a two-run single, and Tyler Freeman added a sacrifice fly, helping the Guardians secure their lead.

Cleveland boasts the best home record in the majors at 31-11 and an overall record of 59-37, trailing only Philadelphiaā€™s 62-35. "Weā€™ve got a good balance where we are right now," Bibee said, expressing optimism about the team's performance as the trade deadline approaches.

Bibee (8-4) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits. Relievers Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Nick Sandlin completed Clevelandā€™s ninth shutout of the season. ā€œWeā€™ve all known that Tanner is a bona fide ace,ā€ Fry said. ā€œNow, the whole league is finding out.ā€

San Diego's Luis Arraez and Jake Cronenworth each had two hits but couldnā€™t generate any offense. ā€œWe started off pretty good and got Bibeeā€™s pitch count up, but we couldnā€™t get anything going,ā€ said San Diego third baseman Manny Machado.

Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on Daniel Schneemannā€™s double, which scored Fry. Fry, who went 3-for-3, had also singled home a run in his All-Star debut earlier in the week. San Diegoā€™s Matt Waldron (5-9) gave up six hits and struck out six. Waldron, originally drafted by Cleveland and traded to the Padres, remains a reliable pitcher for San Diego. ā€œMatt has been a stronghold for our pitching staff,ā€ Machado said.

The Padres, who have played an MLB-high 100 games, have now slipped to a .500 record.
