πŸ“° Painesville Man Denied Bond in Willoughby Murder Case

Fernando Alejo

Fernando Alejo, a 23-year-old resident of Painesville, appeared in court on Tuesday morning in connection with the murder of 17-year-old Rogelio Cabrera. During the arraignment at Willoughby Municipal Court, Alejo was denied bond.

Alejo faces murder charges related to a fatal shooting in Willoughby over the weekend. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 13, around 12:30 a.m. when officers responded to a shooting report in an alleyway near a restaurant at 4066 Erie Street.

A witness reported hearing a gunshot from across the street and seeing a man running west from the scene, with the victim lying on the ground. Willoughby Police found Cabrera, a 17-year-old from Madison, near the back of the alley. Despite first aid efforts by officers and paramedics, Cabrera was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alejo was arrested around 10 a.m. on the same day after officers located his car on I-90 and I-80 in Indiana. He is currently being held at the Lake County Jail and is scheduled for his next court appearance on July 18.

πŸ’₯Ohio Launches Safety Corridor on I-90 to Curb Crashes

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced the launch of a new traffic safety corridor on I-90 in Cuyahoga County to increase seat belt usage and reduce speed-related crashes. The eight-mile stretch from East 55th Street to East 260th Street has been designated as the state's first Speed & Seat Belt Safety Corridor due to its high rate of crashes involving unbelted motorists.

Enhanced patrols will enforce a zero-tolerance policy for speeding and seat belt violations. ODOT has installed signs to inform drivers of the increased law enforcement presence. Governor DeWine is also advocating for a primary seat belt law to further improve safety.

1. Blueberries
Packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, blueberries are a fantastic addition to any diet. These small berries are known for their ability to combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. Add them to your morning yogurt, smoothie, or salad for a burst of flavor and nutrition.

2. Kale
Kale is a leafy green vegetable that's rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and fiber. Its high nutrient content supports bone health, boosts the immune system, and aids in digestion. Enjoy kale in salads, soups, or as baked chips for a crunchy snack.

3. Salmon
Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart and brain health. This fatty fish also provides high-quality protein and a range of vitamins and minerals. Grill, bake, or poach salmon and pair it with vegetables for a delicious, heart-healthy meal.

4. Quinoa
Quinoa is a gluten-free grain that's high in protein and contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source. It's also rich in fiber, magnesium, and iron. Use quinoa as a base for salads, as a side dish, or as a substitute for rice to boost your meal's nutritional value.

5. Avocado
Avocados are loaded with healthy monounsaturated fats, which can help lower bad cholesterol levels. They also provide a good amount of fiber, potassium, and vitamins C, E, and B-6. Add avocado slices to your toast, salads, or smoothies for a creamy, nutrient-packed addition.

These tiny seeds are a powerhouse of nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and various micronutrients. Chia seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water, which helps you stay hydrated and feel full longer. Integrating these superfoods into your diet can significantly improve your overall health and well-being. By making small changes and incorporating these nutrient-rich foods into your meals, you can enjoy a more balanced and nutritious diet.

⚾ The American League Defeats the National League 5-3 in the All Star Game

Boston's Jarren Duran, named All-Star MVP, hit a critical two-run homer in the fifth inning, leading the American League to a 5-3 win over the National League. Pittsburgh rookie Paul Skenes and Shohei Ohtani initially set the pace, but Duran's homer off Cincinnati's Hunter Greene was the turning point. Duran is the fifth Boston player to earn MVP honors, and Oakland's Mason Miller set a pitching record with a 103.6 mph pitch. Cleveland's Emmanuel Clase secured the save.

🏈Browns Lock Down Kicker Dustin Hopkins with Lucrative Three-Year Extension

The Cleveland Browns have secured kicker Dustin Hopkins with a three-year, $15.9 million extension, according to sources reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. This new contract makes Hopkins one of the NFL's top five highest-paid kickers.

Hopkins, 33, had a stellar 2023 season, setting a franchise record by making 33 of 36 field goal attempts, including a career-long 58-yard field goal. He also set an NFL record with five consecutive games featuring a field goal of at least 50 yards.

Originally, Hopkins was entering the final year of his contract, valued at $2.875 million. His new deal places him among the league's elite kickers in terms of annual pay.

Highest-Paid Kickers in the NFL (Annual Pay):

  • Justin Tucker (Ravens): $6M

  • Jake Elliott (Eagles): $6M

  • Matt Gay (Colts): $5.62M

  • Graham Gano (Giants): $5.5M

  • Dustin Hopkins (Browns): $5.3M

  • Ka'imi Fairbairn (Texans): $5.3M

The Browns acquired Hopkins just before the start of the 2023 season in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers, giving up a 2025 seventh-round pick. Originally drafted in the sixth round by the Buffalo Bills in 2013, Hopkins' career included stints with the New Orleans Saints, Washington Commanders, and Chargers before his successful season in Cleveland.

Despite missing the final two regular-season games and the Browns' playoff loss to the Houston Texans due to a hamstring injury, Hopkins is reported to be healthy and has participated in the team's minicamp. The Browns have also re-signed Cade York, who Hopkins replaced last season.
