📰 Lake County Mother Turns Tragedy into Triumph in Fight Against Human Trafficking

Carolyn Kinkoph dedicates her free time to combating human trafficking, driven by personal tragedy. She lost her 29-year-old daughter, Courtney, to trafficking-related circumstances on February 7, 2022, in Cleveland.

Courtney was coerced into sex work and panhandling by traffickers she initially considered friends. Her mother recalls Courtney’s struggles with mental illness and substance abuse, leading to frequent disappearances and hospitalizations. Kinkoph, now an advocate and researcher, was initially unaware of the signs of trafficking.

Carolyn Kinkoph, an administrative secretary at Cleveland State University, is pursuing a doctorate focused on human trafficking. She co-founded the Alliance Against Human Trafficking to educate the public and reduce trafficking demand. This includes a two-day training session on July 17-18 at Cleveland State University for police officers, first responders, and medical professionals on identifying and aiding trafficking victims.

Human trafficking, a form of modern slavery involving forced labor or sexual exploitation, is the second-fastest-growing crime globally. In Northeast Ohio, over 100 victims have been recovered in the past three years.

Kinkoph’s advocacy began after her daughter's case manager alerted her to the risk of trafficking. She joined forces with the Northeast Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force, shifting from feeling helpless to hopeful by providing education and resources to prevent trafficking.

Dan Nash, founder of the Human Trafficking Training Center, leads the upcoming training. He emphasizes the need for skills-based training for law enforcement to identify and support trafficking victims. Nash’s sessions have already led to the discovery of numerous victims nationwide.

Courtney’s tragic journey began with bullying and abusive relationships, leading her into drug abuse and eventual trafficking. Her mother recounts how traffickers exploited Courtney’s vulnerabilities, taking her across various states. Despite numerous rescue efforts, Courtney continued to fall prey to traffickers until her body was found in an abandoned Cleveland apartment in early 2022.

Kinkoph’s commitment to her cause is unwavering. She aims to complete her doctorate by 2025 and continue her advocacy and educational efforts. Her nonprofit and collaboration with local authorities represent her enduring hope and dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals from trafficking.

🦟 Lake County Announces Mosquito Control Schedule

The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) is actively conducting mosquito treatments in densely populated areas to combat mosquito-borne diseases like La Crosse and St. Louis Encephalitis Virus, as well as West Nile Virus. The updated treatment schedule includes specific dates and locations but is subject to change due to weather conditions or other factors. For the most current information, residents are advised to call the Mosquito Hotline or visit the LCGHD website. Mentor is not on the list this week.

📰 New Lake County Facility Hosts Intensive Bomb Disposal and Police Training Programs

National bomb mitigation experts led a four-day training program at the new Lake County Sheriff’s Office facility, where 25 technicians from nine squads in Northeast Ohio learned advanced techniques using robots and disrupters. Concurrently, local deputies received training on handling armed vehicle encounters and active shooter scenarios.

💦 Top Signs You Need to Call a Professional Plumber

Plumbing issues are a common household problem, but knowing when to call a professional plumber can save you time, money, and prevent further damage. Here are the key signs that indicate it's time to seek professional help:

1. Persistent Leaks

If you have a leak that won't stop despite your efforts to fix it, it’s time to call a professional. Persistent leaks can lead to water damage, mold growth, and increased water bills.

2. Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can be caused by various issues such as blockages, pipe corrosion, or leaks. A professional plumber can diagnose and resolve the underlying cause effectively.

3. Slow or Clogged Drains

If your sinks, showers, or toilets are draining slowly or not at all, it could indicate a blockage deep in your plumbing system. Professional plumbers have the tools to clear these blockages without damaging your pipes.

4. No Hot Water

A lack of hot water could be due to a failing water heater. Whether it’s a broken thermostat, sediment buildup, or a malfunctioning element, a professional plumber can repair or replace your water heater.

5. Water Stains and Wet Spots

Unexplained water stains on your walls or ceiling, or wet spots in your yard, can indicate a hidden leak. Professional plumbers can locate and fix these leaks, preventing further structural damage.

6. Sewer System Backup

A sewer system backup is a serious issue that requires immediate professional attention. This can be identified by multiple drain backups, gurgling toilets, or a foul smell from your drains.

7. DIY Repairs Gone Wrong

If you’ve attempted a DIY plumbing repair and it’s gone wrong, causing more problems, it’s best to call a professional to correct the issue and ensure everything is functioning properly.
