📰 Over 30 Ohio Municipalities Receive State Funds to Improve Salt Management

Ohio has initiated a new effort under its H2Ohio water program to reduce road salt usage during winter, aiming to protect water resources from salt runoff. In the state's first allocation of nearly $2 million, more than 30 municipalities will benefit. Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the importance of managing road salt to decrease runoff into streams, rivers, and lakes, ensuring better equipment and storage solutions for local governments.

👨‍🚒 Mentor Fire Rescue Opens Applications for Firefighter/Paramedic Positions

Mentor Fire Rescue is actively recruiting for full-time Firefighter/Paramedic positions. The City of Mentor Civil Service Commission has opened applications for a written exam that will help establish an Eligibility List for these roles. The positions offer a salary ranging from $75,029.74 to $94,723.88 annually.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or in the process of obtaining citizenship, at least 20 years old at the time of application, and 21 years old by the time of appointment. The city's ordinance restricts appointments to individuals under the age of 36. Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license, a high school diploma or GED, and must either be a certified Paramedic or enrolled in paramedic school, achieving certification by the time of appointment.

The physical agility test certificate, required for appointment but not for the written exam, must be current and obtained at the candidate's expense. The written exam is scheduled for June 20, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. at the Mentor Senior Center. A non-refundable $20 filing fee applies, payable by cash or money order only.

Applications are available online and will be accepted in-person from May 1 through May 24, 2024, at the Mentor Municipal Center.

📰 Lake County Honors Local Eateries with Clean Inspection Awards

The Lake County General Health District annually recognizes food service and retail food establishments for exemplary food safety practices with the Clean Inspection Awards. To qualify, businesses must demonstrate comprehensive food safety knowledge, maintain a spotless inspection record, and adhere strictly to state and local regulations. The criteria were detailed in a recent news release from the district.

Eligible businesses were invited to apply for this prestigious recognition. Application forms were distributed along with license renewals in February and made available on the Lake County General Health District's website.

The 2023 award recipients were honored during the Board of Health's April meeting. In addition to the accolade, winners received a Board of Health resolution, a congratulatory letter, a trophy, and a window cling to display their achievement to customers, as outlined in the release.

📰 Ohio Allocates $41 Million to Enhance Road Safety and Protect Pedestrians

The state of Ohio announced a $41 million investment in 27 new traffic safety projects in Ohio, focusing on improving pedestrian safety and preventing roadway departures, the major cause of traffic fatalities in the state. These projects, funded by ODOT’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, will be implemented between 2025 and 2030.

Rangers Overcome Cougars' Early Lead in Chaotic 12-10 Victory

In a thrilling yet chaotic match, the Lake Catholic Cougars faced a tough defeat against the North Rangers with a final score of 12-10. The game, held on Thursday night, was marked by numerous errors and fluctuating momentum. The Cougars initially dominated, scoring three runs in the opening inning and accumulating eight by the end of the third. However, the Rangers made a dramatic comeback, rallying with five runs in the third inning, four in the fourth, and two additional runs in the fifth to take the lead.

Fielding proved challenging for both teams; North committed seven errors and Lake Catholic five. Despite a rough game, Keegan Marsch of the North Rangers emerged as the winning pitcher. In a challenging matchup, the Mentor Cardinals girls' varsity lacrosse team suffered a heavy defeat against the Anthony Wayne Generals, with the final score reading 15-4. The game, which took place on Friday, showcased the Generals' dominance from start to finish. This result brings Mentor’s record to a disappointing 3-10-1 for the season, while Anthony Wayne advances their more positive tally to 9-3.
