The recent opening of the Lake Metroparks Lakefront Trail's first phase was celebrated with enthusiasm on April 30 at Painesville Township Park, alongside the shimmering shores of Lake Erie. This initial stretch, extending nearly half a mile, marks the beginning of a larger vision to connect the trail all the way to Fairport Harbor.

Paul Palagyi, the Executive Director of Lake Metroparks, shared the ambitious plans for extending the trail, highlighting its potential to enhance both the community's quality of life and its economic vitality.

The project has enjoyed broad support, including from local residents and various governmental bodies. The commitment to expanding this scenic route is further supported by the promise of additional federal funding.

The trail, currently 10 feet wide and 2,300 feet long, runs along the Lake Erie shoreline. It is a testament to years of planning and collaboration among numerous partners, including Kurtz Brothers, who donated the land. Looking forward, Lake Metroparks plans to extend the trail westward, incorporating more of the former industrial site into this picturesque route.

šŸ“°Ā Ohioā€™s Climate Action Blueprint Targets Major Emission Reductions with Federal Aid

Ohio has applied for $189 million from the federal government to fund its first climate action plan, focusing on electrifying public transportation, retrofitting public buildings, and installing solar panels. The funds, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, will predominantly support low-income and disadvantaged areas, offering both environmental improvements and economic benefits. This initiative is part of a broader effort to compete for part of a $4.6 billion federal grant designed to help states and cities reduce climate pollution and enhance community resilience.

šŸ“° Lakeland Foundation Receives $400K Boost for Nursing Studentsā€™ Advancement

Lakeland Community College

On April 15, 2024, the Lakeland Foundation proudly announced a significant donation of $400,000 to support the advancement of nursing students at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. An anonymous benefactor has generously pledged this amount to bolster the Margaret Zelina Nursing LPN to RN Assistance Fund, established in 2021.

This donation will enhance three key areas: the existing LPN to RN Assistance Fund, a new LPN to RN Endowment, and the LPN to RN Support Fund. These funds aim to provide substantial financial aid to licensed practical nurse (LPN) students who are in the last two semesters of their transition to registered nurses (RN). This financial support extends beyond scholarships and grants already available to the students, covering critical needs such as childcare, transportation, books, and essential equipment.

Connie Bowler, DNP, RN, the director of Lakelandā€™s nursing program, expressed profound gratitude for the donation. She highlighted the transformative impact of such contributions, which help students overcome various obstacles and persist in their nursing education, ultimately enhancing the quality of healthcare in the community.

Greg Sanders, vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of The Lakeland Foundation, also remarked on the donationā€™s significance. He emphasized that this gift not only underscores the excellence of Lakeland's nursing program but also honors the legacy of Margaret Zelina, reflecting the donor's deep commitment to supporting nursing students in their professional growth.

āš¾ Kennedy Shines as Mentor Cardinals Edge Out Gilmour Lancers 2-1

In a closely contested varsity boys baseball game, the Mentor Cardinals narrowly defeated the Gilmour Academy Lancers with a final score of 2-1 on Thursday. The game commenced with an early lead by Mentor, scoring their first run in the opening inning. The Cardinals maintained this slim lead until the Lancers managed to even the score in the fifth inning. However, Mentor reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning, adding another run to their tally. This decisive second run was enough to secure their victory, as they successfully defended their lead in the final inning.

Peter Kennedy, Mentor's pitcher, delivered a standout performance, pitching the entirety of the seven innings and allowing just one unearned run. Kennedy's efforts were bolstered by his control on the mound, giving up only three hits and a single walk, while striking out four Lancers. Offensively, Andrew Nelson was a key player for the Cardinals, hitting 2-3, both singles, contributing to the teamā€™s total of eight hits.

With this win, Mentor's season record improves to 15-3, with a conference record of 6-2, while Gilmour Academy falls to 12-7.

šŸ„Ā Tough Day for Mentor Cardinals as Cleveland Heights Tigers Dominate 17-4

The Mentor Cardinals girls lacrosse team suffered a heavy defeat to the Cleveland Heights Tigers with a final score of 17-4. Despite efforts from Ella Predina, Ava Lee, and Abby Harps, Mentor struggled defensively, leading to their season record dropping to 3-9-1. Cleveland Heights improved their record to 9-5. Mentor looks to rebound in their next game against the Anthony Wayne Generals.

šŸ„Ž Mentor Cardinals Shut Out by Austintown-Fitch Falcons in Perfect Game Pitched by Watts

The Mentor Cardinals varsity girls softball team encountered a tough game against the Austintown-Fitch Falcons, resulting in a substantial 10-0 defeat. The Cardinals faced a challenging pitcher, Sydnie Watts from the Falcons, who delivered an exceptional performance by pitching a perfect game. Throughout her five innings, Watts struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced.

In addition to the impressive pitching performance, they also managed to score 10 runs against the Cardinals with help again from Sydnie Watts who went 1-2 officially with 4 RBIs and a homerun. With Austintown-Fitch's victory, this elevated their record to 15-1 for the season. Meanwhile, the loss affected Mentor's season record, which now stands at 14-7.

šŸĀ Mama Roberto's: A Blend of Tradition and Flavor in Every Bite

MaMa Robertoā€™s in Mentor

In 1999, Rick and Renee founded Mama Roberto's Pizza and Restaurant at 8658 Mentor Ave, Mentor, Ohio, quickly establishing it as a beloved culinary landmark. Celebrated for its array of Italian-American cuisine, from fresh-baked bread and antipasti to sandwiches and its acclaimed ORIGINAL CLEVELAND STYLE PIZZA, Mama Robertoā€™s has earned accolades as both the best Italian and best family restaurant in Cleveland. The restaurant prides itself on creating a welcoming environment with friendly service, generous portions (did I tell you about the generous portions!?!?), and prices that wonā€™t break the bank.

Mama Robertoā€™s signature offering, the ā€œoriginal Cleveland-style pizza,ā€ stands out alongside other classic Italian dishes such as veal and seafood. Many say a must try dish is the classic chicken marsala, which comes drenched in a rich mushroom marsala wine sauce accompanied by a side of pasta.

Our family has several favorites: for dinner, we adore the fiery (or mild) Pasta Roberto, indulgent calzones, classic pizza, and traditional spaghetti and meatballs. As for lunch, the grilled chicken salad is a must-try! It's generously sizedā€”equivalent to two or three saladsā€”so it lasts for multiple meals. Plus, it's packed with fresh toppings and accompanied by plenty of delicious bread.

Currently, Mama Robertoā€™s offers pickup only service as their dining room is closed. However, be prepared to treat your taste buds to an unforgettable experience!
