šŸ˜ļø How to Turn a Muddy Side Yard Into an Inviting Walkway

Courtesy: This Old House

As with everyone job around your home, you have to ask yourself, ā€œis this job for me or should I call a professional?ā€ Well only you can answer that question.

However, landscape contractors from Distinctive Landscaping in Charlotte, Vermont, have transformed a once muddy and narrow side yard into an appealing walkway, now ready for pathside plants. The pathway, beautifully paved with random bluestone slabs that are 1 Ā½ inches thick, underwent a meticulous construction process, akin to those used for brick and cut stone paths.

The construction began with marking the path using strings and stakes, followed by excavating the soil to a depth suitable for the base, leveling course, and pavers, totaling about 9 to 10 inches. To ensure the stability and prevent spreading of smaller pavers like bricks, permanent edging was installed. The area was then filled with gravel.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: The surface of the gravel was smoothed out using a rake, and then compacted using a plate tamper, which can be rented for approximately $50 a day. For tighter spaces, a hand tamper was employed.

Step 2: A leveling course was set by distributing 1 to 2 inches of fine builderā€™s sand over the gravel, smoothed with a rake. A string was stretched between two stakes along the path to mark the finished surface height.
