📰 Mentor Woman, Sandy Petrovic, Honored for Advocacy in Autism Awareness and Support

David & Sandy Petrovic

Sandy Petrovic's commitment to advocating for those with autism has recently earned her recognition from Milestones Autism Resources, a prominent national organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with autism and their families. Her journey began thirty years ago, when she noticed unusual behaviors in her son David, distinct from those of his older siblings. It was when David was 15 months old that she first observed signs such as tantrums, repetitive actions, and verbal difficulties—early indicators of sensory overload.

Sandy's involvement with Milestones Autism Resources grew as she sought information and support. She served on committees, spoke at conferences, and co-authored a book on autism, transitioning from a seeker of knowledge to a provider of hope and guidance. Her work not only supports her son, who is now an independent adult and a full-time teacher, but also aims to transform public perception during Autism Awareness Month to foster acceptance and proper accommodation for neurodiverse individuals.

David, a testament to the success of personalized support, will be sharing his journey in an upcoming talk titled "My Spectrum on the Spectrum: From Uncertainty to Purpose" at the Wickliffe Public Library. Their book, "Expect A Miracle," co-authored by David and Sandy, highlights their experiences and insights, continuing their mission to aid others navigating similar challenges.

🛳️ My Maiden Voyage: Lessons Learned from the Deck of a Cruise Ship

Embarking on My First Cruise: A Clueless Land-lover's Journey

Meredith Heil, a self-proclaimed "land lover," never imagined she would find herself sailing on the high seas. Yet, on August 26, 2022, she embarked on an eight-day adventure aboard the newly launched Norwegian Prima from Reykjavik, Iceland. This marked her first time spending nights on a vessel, having only experienced shorter maritime excursions previously.

Despite her initial apprehensions about everything from late-night hunger to the nuances of maritime law, Heil's curiosity and excitement for the journey were palpable. She envisioned a week of exploring vibrant port cities like County Cork, Ireland, and La Havre, France, not to mention enjoying star-studded events featuring Katie Perry and Chaka Khan. The ship promised an array of amenities, including a three-tiered go-kart speedway, infinity pools, a full thermal spa, and various dining venues.

Throughout her cruise, Heil soaked in every detail, from mastering the breakfast buffet to enjoying charcoal saunas. She learned to navigate the ship's lingo, dined in high-end restaurants without ever reaching for her wallet again, and discovered the independence allowed at ports. Despite her initial jitters, the experience was transformative, leaving her with a wealth of knowledge and a slight chance she might cruise again.

In a candid recount, Heil shared insights she wished she knew beforehand, like the importance of packing essentials, understanding ship terminology, and the unexpected need for formal wear. She concluded her journey more informed and slightly enamored by the cruising world, pondering the possibility of future voyages.
