🌪️ EF-1 Tornado Leaves Path of Destruction in Windham (Portage County), Community Unites

An EF-1 tornado with winds reaching 110 mph struck Windham, causing significant damage but no injuries. The tornado touched down near State Route 303 and Stanley Road. The community has united in cleanup efforts, demonstrating strong solidarity and resilience in the face of disaster. Another EF-1 tornado hit Bucyrus, Ohio which is just west of Mansfield.

🚨 Northeast Ohio Man Faces Charges After Fatal DUI Crash in Arizona Lake

In a distressing incident in Goodyear, Arizona, a car accident led to the tragic death of a woman after the vehicle she was in plunged into a local lake.

Authorities report that the car was traveling at high speed in a residential area when it hit a curb, spun around, collided with a concrete culvert, and then went airborne, ultimately landing in the lake. The driver, 35-year-old Anthony Maiorana, managed to escape the submerged vehicle and was subsequently hospitalized.

Megan Maiorana, 35, also from Northeast Ohio and identified as Anthony's wife, was the passenger in the car. Despite being securely fastened by her seatbelt, she did not survive the accident. A dive team later recovered her body from the passenger seat.

Following the incident, Anthony Maiorana was arrested and taken into custody at the hospital. He faces several charges, including manslaughter and multiple DUI offenses. Investigations revealed that he had a blood alcohol content of .234 at the time of the accident, significantly above the legal limit, after claiming to have consumed just "two beers" at a baseball game earlier that evening.

📰 Ohio Unemployment Claims Drop as Labor Participation Rate Remains Steady at 61.8%

Last week in Ohio, the number of new and continued traditional unemployment claims saw significant decreases. Initial claims dropped by 1,153 to 4,538, while continued claims fell by 1,594 to 46,563. The state also flagged 797 new claims for further identity checks to prevent fraud. February’s data shows Ohio's unemployment rate at 3.7%, with a labor force participation rate of 61.8%.

Mentor Cardinals Secure Narrow Victory Over Brunswick in Tense Baseball Matchup

In a tightly contested home conference game, the Mentor Cardinals varsity boys baseball team edged out the Brunswick Blue Devils with a slender 1-0 victory on Thursday. The crucial moment came in the fourth inning when Peter Kennedy drove in the game's only run, securing a win for the Cardinals. Brunswick also had 3 fielding errors.

Despite a low-hit game, with Mentor managing just four hits (Brunswick 2), standout performances included Brayden Bortnick, who contributed two of those hits. On the base paths, Peyton Zupancic made significant strides, stealing two bases. Zupancic also shone on the mound, earning the win for his team, while Caden Risma closed the game to record the save.

This victory marks an improvement in the Mentor Cardinals' season record to 9-1, while the defeat sees the Brunswick Blue Devils fall to 6-3.

The Mentor Cardinals girls lacrosse team achieved their first win of the season in a decisive match against the Lakewood Rangers on April 18th. The Cardinals dominated the game, securing a 14-4 victory, which marks a significant turnaround in their season performance.

This win brings the Mentor team's record to 1-6-1, showing their determination to improve despite a challenging start. Conversely, the defeat adjusts the Lakewood Rangers' record to 1-4.

🎶 Mentor Gears Up for the Block-a-Chip Cruise-In with Cars, Food, and Live Music

Gear up for a day of automotive excitement at the Mentor Civic Center Complex on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The Block-a-Chip Mentor Cruise-In, a staple since 2002, draws car enthusiasts with over 800 vehicles and attracts around 2,500 spectators each year. This event is a haven for all types of cars including classics, street racers, vintage RVs from the 1990s, and even the iconic Scooby Doo van.

The event will feature a Super Car Showcase by title sponsor Block-a-Chip, presenting an array of exotic supercars from across the globe. When it’s time to refuel, attendees can enjoy delicious offerings from popular local food trucks such as East Coast Custard, Just Wing’n It, Moose’s Tornado Potatoes, and Kettle Corn.

Enjoy live music as WIXY 1260 will be broadcasting live and taking song requests. Car owners can register the day of the event starting at 8:00 AM, with the first 250 cruisers receiving goodie bags and dash plaques, and all registered owners eligible for door prizes and trophies, judged by the People’s Choice, City Council, and sponsors.

Admission and parking are free. The event prohibits dogs, alcohol, rollerblades, or bicycles. The Mentor Cruise-In is brought to you by Block a Chip and supported by notable sponsors including Cleveland Clinic and Western Reserve Harley Davidson.
