🏈From Nine Teams to Thirty: Northeast Ohio's Girls Flag Football League Booms

The excitement is palpable as the high school girls flag football scene in Northeast Ohio experiences unprecedented growth, moving from nine teams last year to an impressive 30 teams from 21 schools this season. This surge in participation is a collaborative effort between NEO Flag Football and the Cleveland Browns, reflecting a burgeoning interest in the sport.

Bob Berwald, NEO Flag's vice president, expressed his astonishment at the rapid expansion, noting that the actual turnout far exceeded his expectations. Initially hoping for a modest increase, the overwhelming interest from various schools signifies a bright future for the sport.

Since its inception in spring 2021, girls flag football has seen considerable growth, further bolstered by the Cleveland Browns' support, which includes providing uniforms and covering expenses for officials and field rentals. The league's expansion necessitates hosting games at multiple venues, showcasing the sport's growing appeal.

This weekend's games are a testament to the sport's popularity, with a full schedule set for venues in Mentor and Bedford. The format features two 20-minute halves, with fields tailored to the sport's unique dimensions.

Looking ahead, NEO Flag Football plans to host regional tournaments, with the ultimate aim of having girls flag football recognized as a sanctioned sport by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. The sport's expansion into Cincinnati and Columbus underscores its rising prominence in Ohio.

📰Mahoning County Shaken by 3.0 Magnitude Earthquake, Felt Across Northeast Ohio

Early in the morning at 4:42 a.m., residents of Mahoning County and its surroundings experienced a 3.0 magnitude earthquake near Maple Ridge, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. This seismic event, originating two kilometers south of Maple Ridge at a depth of 5.9 kilometers, prompted reports of mild tremors across various nearby areas.

Though considered minor, with an intensity level causing weak shaking without damage, the quake was felt not only in Maple Ridge but also in neighboring communities like Sebring, Alliance, and even further afield in Columbiana County, Stark County, and the Akron area. This incident marks another seismic activity in the Northeast Ohio region, following two smaller quakes in Lake County this past January.
