👮Mentor Police Launch Innovative Drone Team to Enhance Public Safety

In February 2023, the Mentor Police Department expanded its range of specialty teams with the addition of the Mentor Drone Team. The team comprises Sgt. Steve Ondercin, Pt. Shawn Wilson, and Pt. Logan Hanreck, along with Capt. Robert Valley and Det. Brian Yenkevich, both seasoned FAA-licensed pilots. This new unit harnesses cutting-edge unmanned aerial system (UAS) technology to bolster public safety, offering a cost-effective solution to enhance situational awareness and protect first responders during critical situations.
Drones have emerged as invaluable assets in various operations, including search and rescue missions, hazardous material identification, fugitive searches, crime scene documentation, accident reconstruction, fire investigations, and night-time operations. Equipped with advanced features like high-definition cameras, thermal imaging, and spotlights, the Mentor Drone Team can deliver comprehensive visual support across expansive areas, in darkness, or in scenarios where deploying first responders is too risky.
The team collaborates closely with other specialty units, providing vital video footage to ground teams or command centers to aid in tactical planning and decision-making during emergencies. Throughout 2023, the Mentor Drone Team has played a pivotal role in locating missing persons, mapping crime and accident scenes, supporting tactical operations, and assisting the Mentor Fire Department in identifying hot spots during field fires.
Funding for some of the team's drone equipment was sourced through grants from the Lake County Public Safety UAS Team, which also offers training and additional resources. The team's pilots are thoroughly trained in FAA regulations, flight operations, indoor searches, search and rescue, and geo-spatial imaging, ensuring adherence to privacy laws and regulations.

📰 Campbell Soup Faces Legal Action for Water Pollution in Ohio

In Toledo, Ohio, Environment America (operating as Environment Ohio) and Lake Erie Waterkeeper have initiated a lawsuit against Campbell Soup Supply Company, a Campbell Soup, Inc. subsidiary, citing numerous Clean Water Act breaches at its Napoleon, Ohio canning factory. Concurrently, the U.S. Department of Justice, representing the EPA, filed a similar lawsuit. Both parties are in settlement talks with Campbell Soup, aiming to resolve the factory's longstanding pollution issues, particularly its excessive discharges into the Maumee River, impacting Lake Erie's health. The environmental groups, alongside federal agencies, seek a court-enforced agreement to halt the facility's illegal waste emissions, notably high in phosphorous and other pollutants, contributing to Lake Erie's toxic algal blooms.

🪖Mentor's Streets to Display Hometown Heroes Banners Honoring Military Service
The City of Mentor is proud to announce the return of its Hometown Heroes Banner Program for 2024, celebrating the valor and dedication of current or former Mentor residents who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. The overwhelming response from the community has resulted in all banners for 2024 being sold out.
During the season, from Memorial Day through Veterans Day, these banners will grace Civic Center Boulevard and Munson Road, creating a corridor of honor between Center Street and Market Street. This visual tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our service members.
After Veterans Day, the banners will be taken down and available for pickup starting November 15, 2024. For those interested in participating next year or with any inquiries, the Public Information Office can be reached at (440) 974-5794 or via email at [email protected]. Residents are encouraged to contact the office to be added to the notification list for the 2025 program.
The city extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants in this meaningful program, acknowledging the significant contributions of Mentor's veterans and active-duty military personnel.

🤼Antonio Shelley: The Mighty Mentor Gladiator Who Defied Size with Grand Achievements
Antonio Shelley, a senior at Mentor, has distinguished himself in both football and wrestling despite being the smallest member of his athletic family. In wrestling, he achieved the status of Mentor's only four-time state qualifier and three-time state placer. Despite his small stature, he successfully competed at 144 pounds in wrestling and excelled as a safety in football, earning second team Division I All-Ohio honors. His perseverance and leadership have made him a role model for younger athletes. Shelley is set to continue his wrestling career at Baldwin Wallace University, aiming for a Division III national championship while planning to major in business or sports management.
