🧑‍🔧 DIY Fix: How to Easily Repair Your Leaky Kitchen Faucet

WATCH the 5 minute video above or read below.

Fixing a leaky kitchen faucet can often be resolved by tightening or replacing the faucet stem cartridge. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you stop the leak:

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply: Before starting any repair, ensure you turn off the water supply to your faucet. There should be valves under the sink that you can turn clockwise to shut off the water.

  2. Plug the Drain: Use a sink plug or a rag to block the drain. This prevents any dropped parts from going down the drain.

  3. Identify the Faucet Type: Determine if your faucet is a ball-type, ceramic disk, cartridge, or compression faucet. The process might vary slightly depending on the type.

  4. Disassemble the Faucet:

    • For a cartridge faucet: Remove the handle by loosening the screw that holds it. This screw is typically hidden under a decorative cap you can pry off with a flathead screwdriver. Once the handle is off, you can access the cartridge.

    • For other types of faucets: The process might be slightly different. You'll generally need to remove the handle and then access the internal mechanism (ball, disc, or valve).

  5. Inspect the Cartridge: Once you've exposed the cartridge, inspect it for any signs of damage or wear. If it's a cartridge faucet, you can often just pull the cartridge out. Sometimes, you might need a special tool (cartridge puller) for this step.

  6. Replace or Tighten the Cartridge: If the cartridge is damaged, replace it with a new one that matches your faucet model. If it's not damaged, try tightening it to see if that stops the leak.

  7. Reassemble the Faucet: Once the cartridge is tightened or replaced, reassemble the faucet in the reverse order you disassembled it.

  8. Test the Faucet: Turn the water supply back on and test the faucet for leaks. If it's still leaking, you might need to check if there's a problem with the seals or O-rings inside the faucet and replace them if necessary.

  9. Final Check: Ensure everything is back in place and the handle moves smoothly. Check once more for any leaks.

By following these steps, you should be able to fix a leaky kitchen faucet. If the problem persists, it might be time to consult a professional plumber.

📰 Economize Your Kitchen: When to Mend or End Your Dishwasher

When grappling with the decision of whether to repair or replace a broken dishwasher, various factors need to be weighed. The appliance's age, how frequently it's used, the costs associated with repair and replacement, and the long-term economic benefits should all guide your decision. Typically, if your dishwasher hasn't reached the end of its functional life, repairing it could be more cost-effective than a replacement.

Key Points to Consider:

  1. Evaluate the dishwasher's age, usage patterns, and both the repair and replacement costs.

  2. Aim for the choice that offers the best long-term economic benefits.

  3. Repair is often more cost-effective unless the dishwasher is nearly beyond repair.

Cost Analysis:

Dishwasher repair costs average around $180 but can vary. Minor repairs may cost less than $150, while major fixes like control board or pump assembly replacements can approach $400. A technician's visit for a diagnosis and estimate is usually necessary to determine the exact cost. If repair costs are below $300, repair is likely the favorable option.

Dishwasher Lifespan and Replacement Costs:

Dishwashers typically last about 10 years, with longevity extending through regular maintenance or infrequent use. The cost for a new dishwasher ranges from $400 to $700, influenced by the model's features and noise level. Remember to account for additional expenses like delivery and installation when considering replacement.

In conclusion, whether you choose to repair or replace your dishwasher, consider the appliance's age, repair costs, usage, and potential replacement costs. For those leaning towards repair, find a reputable appliance repair business near you with a good reputation.
