🐝 Buzzing with Life: How Your Yard Waste Can Save Pollinators

In striving for the most attractive yards, we often overlook the environmental costs. Yard debris, typically seen as waste, is actually a crucial source of nutrients for our soil and a haven for the eggs of essential pollinators like butterflies, moths, and native bees. Instead of discarding leaves, consider these eco-friendly alternatives:

  1. Composting: Create a compost pile in a secluded area of your yard, securing the leaves with sticks to prevent them from scattering.

  2. Leaf Mulching: Spread leaves over your gardens or flower beds to enrich the soil, aiding your vegetable's growth.

  3. Lawn Mulching: Use a mower to mulch the leaves directly on the lawn, which nourishes the soil, although it might harm the egg masses.

  4. Seasonal Disposal: Postpone disposing of yard waste until temperatures consistently reach around 50 degrees, allowing pollinators to emerge.

  5. Enhancing Pollinator Habitats: Incorporate native plants like Butterfly milkweed, New England aster, and Black-eyed Susan to create a pollinator-friendly yard.

❄️ Travel Alert: Geauga County Faces Winter Storm Watch with Blustery Conditions Saturday Night into Sunday

Just in case you need to head south into Geauga County

In a recent announcement, the National Weather Service in Cleveland has placed Geauga County under a winter storm watch, affecting cities like Chardon, South Russell, Bainbridge, Chesterland, Middlefield, and Burton. The watch is a precaution against potential heavy lake-effect snow anticipated from late Saturday to late Sunday. Depending on the evolving weather conditions, this watch may escalate to a winter weather advisory or a winter storm warning, especially given that heavy snowfall of at least 6 inches is expected within the next 18 to 48 hours.

The forecast suggests that northern Geauga County could see three to six inches of snow, a significant amount compared to other parts of northeastern Ohio, where less than two inches is expected. Surrounding areas like eastern Cuyahoga, southern Lake, and Ashtabula Counties might receive one to three inches of snow. The anticipated weather conditions could make travel challenging, particularly in the snowbelt regions, where blustery winds could lead to patchy blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility.

🏀 Canton Central Catholic Advances to Semifinal After Overpowering Lake Catholic

In a gripping Division III district final on March 8, Lake Catholic faced off against Canton Central Catholic but ultimately succumbed to the latter's strategic gameplay, resulting in a 56-38 victory for the Crusaders. Despite Lake Catholic's efforts to overturn an early disadvantage, their struggle to land three-point shots in the crucial fourth quarter allowed Canton Central Catholic to secure their win and advance to the regional semifinal against Cardinal Mooney. The Crusaders, led by standout performances from Gavin Layman and Lance Vlacovsky, showcased their dominance in the latter part of the game, capitalizing on their momentum to seal their triumph.
