👮 Valor in Crisis: Mentor's Finest Recognized for Bravery in Mass Shooting Response

In a moving State of the City address, Mentor, Ohio, recognized the valor of its police officers who responded to the city's first mass shooting. Officers Shawn Wilson, Brad Nicholson, Chuck Cox, and Anthony Haddad were honored with the Distinguished Service Award by the Lake County Blue Coats Association for their exceptional bravery during the crisis. The officers' swift and decisive actions upon arriving at the Mentor Mobile Green Estates incident in November 2023 were crucial in providing aid to victims and preventing further loss of life.

🍁Sweet Discovery: Experience Maple Syrup Production at the Lake Farmpark

This was held this past weekend on March 2-3 and concludes this coming weekend on March 9-10. Come and learn how maple syrup is produced. However, don’t just learn, pick up some pancakes and indulge in some maple syrup treats and syrup to take home. 😃 

Visitors had a delightful experience during their wagon journey to the Woodland Center, where they delved into the fascinating process of maple syrup production. With over 1,000 taps intricately connected through an extensive network of tubing and pumps, the event offered a comprehensive insight into the journey from sap collection to syrup creation. Attendees had the unique opportunity to observe the tapping of trees, explore the interconnected tubing system, and even participate in collecting sap from bucket taps. The event provided a hands-on learning experience, teaching visitors how to produce maple syrup in their own backyards. Additionally, the café offered pancakes throughout the day for those who wanted to indulge, available for an additional fee. To top off the experience, Farmpark's homemade maple syrup and candy were available for purchase, allowing guests to take a piece of their sweet adventure home.

The Village of Fairport Harbor is hosting an Eclipse Viewing Party at the Lighthouse Hill on April 8, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This event includes music, food trucks, and activities from local organizations, all set against the backdrop of a solar eclipse expected at 3:15 p.m. Attendees are reminded to use proper eclipse glasses for safe viewing.

🏀High-Flying Cardinals Crush North, Eye District Glory in Next Tournament Challenge

Mentor High School's boys basketball team showcased an impressive performance in a recent Division I sectional final, overpowering North with a combination of a relentless full-court press and sharpshooting from beyond the arc. In a commanding victory, Mentor defeated North 112-68, demonstrating their prowess by converting 20 of 36 three-point attempts. This win propels Mentor into the district tournament, continuing a remarkable streak of 17 consecutive seasons.

The game was a high-scoring affair, with Mentor's offensive strategy paying dividends as they quickly built a substantial lead, capitalizing on North's turnovers and converting them into points. Senior players Matthew Biddell and Ian Ioppolo led the charge for Mentor, with Biddell scoring 36 points and Ioppolo adding 27, both showcasing their accuracy from three-point range.

Despite the loss, North concluded a notable season, highlighted by their status as Western Reserve Conference champions, their best finish in a decade. Senior Sean Register, North's all-time leading scorer, made a significant contribution with 31 points in his final high school game.

As Mentor advances in the tournament, they look forward to a challenging matchup against Green, setting the stage for potentially more thrilling basketball action in the district semifinals.
