Excitement is in the air at Mentor Marsh as the local eagle population is deep into their incubation period, with just a few more weeks until the expected hatching. Wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to witness this natural spectacle. If you're planning a visit to the Marsh this weekend, your observations and experiences are highly valued! Additionally, the nature center welcomes visitors today, Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. An organized hike aimed at spotting various waterfowl species is scheduled at 2 pm, promising an engaging and informative experience. Two horses from Cleveland’s Mounted Police unit got free on Saturday during some routine care and exercise. Looks like a scene out of a movie. Thankfully, the two horses were eventually recovered without further incident.

Hello travel friends! It's Ed Schmidt, Travel advisor and enthusiast here to welcome you to my travel column.

Vacationing can often be fun, adventurous, and relaxing, but other times stressful and frustrating. Often these results are due to circumstances beyond our control. During the next few weeks, this column will offer tips, information and fun facts related to travel. We all travel for many different reasons. I like to make the best possible memories that will be shared with family, loved ones, and eventually be passed down to future generations.

Presently the demand for leisure travel is at an all-time high. So, let me provide you with some valuable tips to consider when booking a cruise.

1. It is imperative you book early! This will ensure availability and the best possible rates. A well-known travel fact is the price will go up as availability goes down. A good example of this is several major cruise lines have already opened up their schedules for 2026 because 2024 and 2025 are filling up.

2. Along with early booking for a future cruise please remember to get your passport. This will be your hall pass to move about the planet. It's also essential if you need to quickly return home. You must have your passport to fly from an international port.

3. Another suggestion for a smooth cruise is to arrive at least one day prior to the start of the cruise. Airlines are not responsible for making sure you do not miss your ship's departure. Early arrival is also for those driving due to untimely car breakdowns, traffic accidents and delays that can make it difficult for on time arrival. Go early and enjoy the embarkation city, for It may be a surprise addition to your vacation.

Air travel is great as it can get us to our destination the quickest way possible, however current trends and experience have shown that air travel can be frustrating. Many of us have experienced a delayed overbooked flight or even a cancellation. This is why early arrival is so important. Please remember that you get more bees with honey than vinegar. Be kind to the staff trying to help you reroute or rebook your flight.

BONUS PRO TIPS: If you are booking your own flights make sure you are matching the names of all passengers with the proper document i.e., passport, driver license. Also, don’t let price be the deciding factor for flights. You could book a ticket that does not give you a seat selection or carry-on bag. You will have to pay extra for these as you travel and cost you more money than regular coach tickets.
