✈️ Ohio Pioneers Drone-Based Traffic Surveillance Program on U.S. 33

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is embarking on an innovative project to enhance traffic surveillance by deploying a large drone over a four-mile stretch of U.S. 33, northwest of Columbus. This initiative, part of a pilot program, has received the green light from federal aviation officials, allowing the drone to fly beyond the visual line of sight of its pilot—a first of its kind for traffic monitoring purposes in the country.

The drone, a 20-pound Censys Sentaero with a 7.5-foot wingspan, will complement existing ground-based traffic cameras, offering a new vantage point to monitor traffic flow, respond to incidents, and support search and rescue operations. ODOT aims to leverage the drone's flexibility and advanced sensors to gather real-time data on traffic conditions, which is especially valuable in managing unforeseen events on the road.

This stretch of highway, known as the "Smart Mobility Corridor," is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including fiber-optic cables and road sensors, facilitating research into future automotive innovations. It connects Columbus with Marysville, home to a significant Honda factory and the state’s Transportation Research Center.

The drone's deployment is seen as a step forward in integrating unmanned aerial systems (UAS) into everyday traffic management and emergency response. It is equipped with sensors to detect other aircraft and can be fitted with additional equipment for hazmat situations, underscoring its versatility beyond mere traffic surveillance.

ODOT officials are optimistic about the program's potential, suggesting that success could lead to the use of similar drones in other areas, particularly in rural locations where traffic monitoring infrastructure may be less developed. The FAA's approval for this project extends for four years, signaling a significant window for testing and evaluating the drone's impact on traffic management and safety.

💵 Teens in Beachwood Face Charges After Finding Counterfeit Cash Trove

Two teenagers were apprehended by Beachwood police after attempting to use counterfeit $100 bills at a local gas station. The incident occurred at Joe's Kwik Mart at the BP station on Chagrin Boulevard. When caught, the youths claimed they had discovered the fake money under a rock. One teenager was found with three counterfeit bills, while the other had 13. They were arrested after police traced them walking on Chagrin Boulevard near Fire Station Drive, following a tip about the counterfeit currency used at the gas station.

The boys, upon interrogation, revealed they stumbled upon 17 fake $100 bills hidden under a rock close to Yours Truly restaurant. During the arrest, one of the boys provided false information to the police, including fake contact details for his mother. He was subsequently charged with falsification and released to his aunt. The other teenager was found in possession of a small knife, leading to an additional charge of carrying an illegal weapon. He was handed over to his mother.
