📰 Local Nonprofit Battles Food Insecurity with Community Support

The United Way of Lake County (UWLC) is gearing up for its 32nd "Feed Lake County Food Drive and Fundraiser," starting March 1st, with the campaign running through April. Mentor-based Buyers Products Co. has committed to match all monetary donations up to $25,000 until March 31st, bolstering the fundraising efforts for the third consecutive year. The initiative addresses the escalating issue of food insecurity, exacerbated by a 25% increase in food costs over four years, impacting families, especially those within the ALICE threshold—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

In Lake County, about one-third of households are struggling to afford basic needs, with 22,740 residents living with food insecurity. This has led to an annual food budget shortfall of $16,325,000. UWLC encourages monetary donations as the most effective form of support, alongside participating in food and fundraising drives. The collected food will be distributed to 38 local pantries, and all monetary gifts will be used to replenish supplies throughout the year. Last year, the campaign provided nearly $119,000 in food and over 19,000 congregate meals to seniors.

☀️Spectacular Sunrise in NE Ohio: High Clouds Paint the Sky Red

On Wednesday morning, Northeast Ohio residents were treated to a stunning visual display as the rising sun cast a radiant red glow through the haze, creating an unforgettable start to the day. The unusual sunrise, reminiscent of the vivid hues seen during last summer's Canadian wildfires, captured the attention of many, including Megan Hrovat from Chesterland who shared a striking photo of the scene. Contrary to initial thoughts linking the phenomenon to smoke, the red sunrise was actually due to high clouds positioned behind storms and ahead of a powerful cold front sweeping through the area. This atmospheric condition, along with the anticipation of a Wind Advisory for NE Ohio, has once again showcased the dynamic and often surprising nature of our environment.

🐩8 Essential Tips to Get Your Pet Ready for Spring

As the chill of winter gives way to the warmth of spring, it's an exciting time for pet owners to embark on new adventures with their furry companions. As spring closes in, pet owners are tasked with preparing their furry friends for the season's unique demands. However, the transition into warmer weather also brings a set of challenges that require careful attention to ensure the safety and happiness of your pets. Here's a guide to preparing your pet for the spring season, with eight essential tips to protect them from potential hazards.

  • As the weather warms up, it's important to protect pets from outdoor chemicals commonly found in lawn treatments, which can harm their paws or cause illness if ingested. Pet owners should wash their pets' paws after outdoor activities and monitor them to avoid ingestion of treated grass.

  • Shedding increases with the onset of warmer weather, making regular brushing essential to remove dandruff, dead hair, and keep homes free of excess fur.

  • The rise in temperatures brings about pests like mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. Pet owners are advised to ensure their pets are on preventative treatments to avoid diseases such as heartworm.

  • Pets, like humans, can experience seasonal allergies. Symptoms like excessive scratching should be monitored, with vets able to prescribe antihistamines for relief.

  • It's important to inspect and repair any damage to yard fencing from winter to keep pets safe and secure. Additionally, pet owners should be aware of and remove any toxic plants that could harm their pets.

  • Checking and adjusting pets' collars and tags for fit and wear is essential as pets spend more time outdoors.

  • After the less active winter months, pets should be gradually reintroduced to exercise to avoid injury or discomfort.

These measures will help make the transition into spring a joyful and safe experience for pets and their owners.

📰 Summit County Investigates Potential Cat Poisoning Incident

In Summit County, an investigation has been launched into a suspected case of animal poisoning at Sandy Beach Trailer Park in Green, after the discovery of numerous bowls filled with antifreeze. The disturbing find has raised concerns among residents and authorities alike, with potential risks to both pets and children highlighted by Summit County Sheriff's Office Lt. Karla Bloomingdale. The incident was uncovered shortly after an animal rescue group, The Humane Bean, engaged in a trap-neuter-return program for feral cats in the area, found over 50 bowls of antifreeze. In response to the potential threat, the group has placed several cats into foster care to monitor for signs of poisoning, while authorities contemplate criminal charges against the individual(s) responsible for this act. So, sad.
