📰 Public Urged to Voice Concerns Over Dominion Energy's Rate Hike Plan

The Office of the Ohio Consumers' Counsel is challenging Dominion Energy's proposed rate increase for natural gas distribution, which could see the average customer's bill rise by more than $100 annually—a 30% increase. Additionally, an extra charge under consideration could add up to nearly $30 monthly over eight years. This proposal has raised concerns amid escalating energy prices and inflation, particularly affecting consumers already under financial strain. The rate adjustment, primarily for distributing natural gas to homes, excludes the cost of the gas itself. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is currently reviewing the case, with public hearings anticipated. The Consumers' Counsel is advocating for public participation in the comment period and has requested a virtual hearing option to ensure broader accessibility.

Dominion Energy, serving around 1.2 million residential customers, justifies the hike as necessary to recuperate over $4 billion invested in infrastructure improvements over the past 16 years, with $1 billion still pending recovery. These upgrades, which include pipeline replacements and operational enhancements, have also led to increased property taxes and operational costs for the company. Despite opposition to a virtual hearing by Dominion, the outcome of this request is pending. The proposed increase aims to boost Dominion's revenue by $212 million but will not affect those on Income Payment Plans.
