❄️ Ohio Outdoor Enthusiasts: Beware of Winter Water Hazards, Advises ODNR

As winter sets in, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft is urging outdoor enthusiasts to take extra precautions while enjoying Ohio's lakes and rivers. The drop in temperature significantly increases the risks associated with cold water, which can cool the body 25 times faster than cold air. With nearly 90% of boating fatalities attributed to drowning, often due to cold water immersion, ODNR emphasizes the importance of wearing life jackets.

ODNR Director Mary Mertz highlighted the need for preparation in facing cold water dangers, emphasizing life jacket usage. Similarly, ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft Chief Glen Cobb advised visitors to stay vigilant about hypothermia risks and dress appropriately in layers. He also stressed creating a float plan to inform someone about your whereabouts and expected return time.

The department maintains a Winter Recreation Safety website offering additional safety tips, and has also released a Cold Water Safety Video. The ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft continues to balance customer service, education, and conservation in managing Ohio's 75 state parks and waterways, ensuring a safe and enjoyable winter experience for all.
