šŸ¦š Feathers Ruffled in Willoughby: The Hunt for a Beloved Missing Peacock

In Willoughby Ohio, right next door, a unique search is underway for a missing member of the communityā€”not a person, but a peacock, known for its dazzling feathers and majestic appearance. This peacock isn't just any bird; it's a beloved pet to a local family, cherished not only for its beauty but also for the joy it brings to their lives, especially the grandchildren who delight in its presence.

The story began weeks ago on Bell Road (just off Lost Nation) where a family's backyard pen, home to four peacocks, was left inadvertently open. This mishap allowed the birds to escape, sparking a local search. Quickly, two of the escapees were found in a neighbor's yard, but tragedy struck when a third was hit by a vehicle. The fourth peacock remains missing, with the community and the Willoughby Police Department joining forces in the hope of a safe return.

Detective Lieutenant John Begovic of the Willoughby Police Department, with over three decades of law enforcement experience, expressed his astonishment at the situation, noting the rarity of a peacock search in his career. The loss has deeply affected the family, who have raised the peacocks for about two years, creating a sanctuary that includes chickens, roosters, and formerly pheasants, with the peacocks as their pride.

The police have made efforts to assist, including returning the deceased bird to the family for a proper farewell and issuing calls to locate the last missing peacock. Neighbors, like Dave LaVigna, have also expressed their willingness to help, keeping an eye out for the colorful bird.

The incident has sparked a reminder of the care needed when encountering such an exotic pet: maintaining distance, refraining from feeding or attempting to catch it, and contacting authorities if sighted. The community's collective effort underscores the bond between humans and their animal companions, no matter how unusual, and the lengths to which they will go to ensure their safety and well-being.

šŸ“°Ā Veterans Park in Mentor Temporarily Closes for Deer Population Control

In an effort to address the burgeoning deer populations, Lake Metroparks has announced the temporary closure of Veterans Park in Mentor, Ohio. This measure, set to commence Monday, aims to facilitate a culling operation by sharpshootersā€”a method chosen in locales where controlled archery hunting is deemed unsuitable.

The decision to employ sharpshooters reflects a broader strategy across Ohio cities to manage deer populations effectively, with similar actions taken in Parma and North Olmsted this winter. The park is expected to be closed to the public for just over a day, with plans to reopen by midday Tuesday. During this period, strict security measures will be in place to ensure the safety and efficiency of the operation.

Residents or interested parties seeking more information about this initiative are encouraged to contact Kenn Kaminski at the city for further details. This approach to wildlife management underscores the challenges faced in balancing ecological health and public safety, particularly in areas where deer have become notably overabundant.

šŸ“° Beyond Lincoln and Washington: Remembering James A. Garfield This Presidents Day

Presidents Day transcends the legacy of Lincoln and Washington, extending its honor to all U.S. Presidents, including Ohio's eight and the undervalued James A. Garfield. Born in poverty and rising to significant political and military stature, Garfield's potential was cut short by assassination. His story, deeply rooted in Cleveland and marked by a commitment to education and civil rights, showcases the broader spectrum of American presidential history.

šŸ€ Mentorā€™s Lake Catholic Falls to Padua Bruins in Hard-Fought Battle

In a closely contested game that took place in Parma, the Lake Catholic Boys Basketball team faced a setback against the Padua Bruins, ending with a score of 60-53. This loss adjusts Lake Catholic's season record to 8-12. The game was highlighted by an outstanding performance from Padua's Riley Cervenka, who led the scoring with 26 points, showcasing his skill and determination on the court. As the Bruins celebrate their victory, they are already looking ahead to their next challenge, which will see them traveling to North Ridgeville.

Despite taking an early lead, with a halftime score favoring the Cougars at 26-22, Lake Catholic couldn't hold onto their advantage. They are now focusing on their next opportunity for redemption, as they prepare to face Elyria Catholic in Elyria this coming Tuesday.
